Waves in structured media: non-radial solar p modes
نویسنده
چکیده
For non-radial solar p modes we calculate corrections to the eigenfrequencies arising from the sound speed and velocity inhomogeneity of the convection zone. We use a simple periodic model, and obtain the frequency corrections by solving a Hill determinant. The frequency shifts are significant, and in most cases negative; they increase in magnitude with increasing frequency and harmonic degree l. The dependence on degree scales with the mode inertia. For large degree l this trend reverses. For very large degree coupling occurs between the p modes and “vibrational” modes that only exist because of the horizontal structure in sound speed and velocity.

Asymptotic analysis of linear non-adiabatic non-radial oscillation of the solar p-modes
The non-adiabatic frequencies of a standard solar model are discussed in this paper. The physics describing the radiative losses is included in the non-adiabatic effects. An asymptotic approximation to the non-adiabatic non-radial p-modes of the Sun is developed. An exact solution of non-adiabatic oscillations, which results in an eigenfrequency equation with the model-dependent surface phase sh...
متن کاملWave Generation by Turbulent Convection
We consider wave generation by turbulent convection in a plane parallel, stratified atmosphere that sits in a gravitational field, g. The atmosphere consists of two semi-infinite layers, the lower adiabatic and polytropic and the upper isothermal. The adiabatic layer supports a convective energy flux given by mixing length theory; Fe ""'pv~, where pis mass density and v8 is the velocity of the ...
متن کاملNon -propagating Waves and Behavior of Curtainwall-pile Breakwaters
Abstract Usually, evanescent modes or non-propagating waves are produced when a propagating incident wave impinges on an interface between two media or materials such as curtainwall-pile breakwater (CPB) at a subcritical angle and decay with distance from interface. To achieve an effective prediction of hydrodynamic performance of CPB and overcome the problem of underestimation of energy loss, ...
متن کاملSpecial feature Theoretical amplitudes and lifetimes of non-radial solar-like oscillations in red giants
Context. Solar-like oscillations have been observed in numerous red giants from ground and from space. An important question arises: could we expect to detect non-radial modes probing the internal structure of these stars? Aims. We investigate under what physical circumstances non-radial modes could be observable in red giants; what would be their amplitudes, lifetimes and heights in the power ...
متن کاملEFFECT OF NONLINEAR INTERACTIONS ON p-MODE FREQUENCIES AND LINE WIDTHS
We calculate the effect of nonlinear interactions among solar acoustic modes upon the modal frequencies and energy loss rates (or line widths). The frequency shift for a radial p-mode of frequency 3 mHz is found to be about -0.5 JlHz. The magnitude of nonlinear frequency shift increases more rapidly with frequency than the inverse mode mass (mode mass is defined as the ratio of energy in the mo...
